Some vessels carry satellite connectivity. Where it exists it is typically metered, slow, shared among everyone aboard and reserved primarily for operational and safety traffic. If staying reachable is a genuine requirement rather than a preference, ask about it in writing before booking and expect a qualified answer.
How should you handle being offline?
Tell people before you go. This sounds trivial and it is the single most common source of stress on a remote liveaboard: a family member who was not told expects daily contact and starts worrying on day three. Give your emergency contact the operator’s office number and the vessel’s name, explain that silence is expected, and agree that any genuine emergency goes through the office rather than to your phone.

The generator schedule is not an inconvenience so much as a green measure: solar and battery capacity that lets a boat cut generator hours at anchor is one of the more meaningful things a vessel can do, along with a reverse-osmosis watermaker instead of crates of bottled water. What does a camera workflow at sea look like?
- Rinse discipline. The camera tank is for cameras. Nobody puts a mask, a fin or a wetsuit in it. Soak, work the controls gently, lift out and let it drip in shade.
- O-rings before every closure. On a dry towel, out of the wind, with a clean cloth and the correct grease sparingly applied. Almost every flood traces back to a hair, a grain of sand or a salt crystal.
- Humidity. Equatorial air plus air conditioning fogs ports. Silica packs in the housing, and close it in the driest, coolest part of the boat you can find.
- Salt and sun. Never leave a housing in direct sun on a deck; the pressure differential when it cools into cold water is a real cause of leaks.
- Charging etiquette. Label your chargers, take them off the bank when they are done, and do not occupy four sockets overnight on a boat of twelve.

How much battery capacity do you really need?
Plan for two full diving days without charging. For a housed mirrorless system with two strobes that usually means three to four camera batteries, a full complement of strobe cells plus a spare set, and a charged power bank for phones and dive computers. Rechargeable AA cells for strobes are worth the weight if your strobes take them.
The other habit that matters is backup. Without cloud upload, redundancy is physical: offload to a laptop and to a separate portable drive every evening, keep the two in different places aboard, and do not format a card until both copies exist.
