Every Raja Ampat trip runs through Sorong (SOQ). Jakarta–Sorong is roughly 4–4.5 hours direct, Makassar–Sorong roughly 2–2.5. If your boat departs from Waisai, add a fast ferry of about two hours. Arrive a day early — a missed connection means a missed departure.
How do you actually get to Raja Ampat?
Every route funnels through the same bottleneck. There is no international airport in Raja Ampat; you fly to Sorong on the West Papua mainland, and from there you either board your vessel in Sorong harbour or take the fast ferry to Waisai on Waigeo. The realistic total transit from Europe is two calendar days.

Garuda Indonesia and the Lion Air group, including Batik Air, have been the carriers most consistently serving Sorong. We phrase that carefully because domestic Indonesian route maps change with the season — treat any airline list, including this one, as a starting point for your own search rather than a timetable.
Why do operators insist on arriving a day early?
Because the alternative is catastrophic and common. Indonesian domestic connections are reliable most of the time and then, occasionally, are not: a weather delay in Makassar, a reallocated aircraft, a missed transfer window in Jakarta. A liveaboard on a fixed charter schedule cannot hold its departure for one guest, and there is no way to catch up with a boat that has sailed for Misool.
One night in a Sorong hotel is a modest cost against a trip that runs to several thousand US dollars. Build it into your budget from the start — we include it as a standard line item in what a Raja Ampat liveaboard really costs. If you can spare two nights, better still: it also gives delayed luggage a chance to catch up.
What do you need to know about the Sorong–Waisai ferry?
The crossing takes about two hours on the fast ferry. Departures are commonly reported around 09:00 and around 14:00, with economy tickets in the region of IDR 150,000 to 250,000, usually operated by Express Bahari. We flag all of that as indicative: we have not been able to verify an official published timetable, schedules shift, and sailings are occasionally cancelled for weather. Confirm with your operator or locally on arrival.
Whether you need the ferry at all depends on your vessel. Sorong-based boats board in Sorong; Waisai-based boats meet guests at the marine park office at Waisai harbour. The marine park office meeting point is convenient because that is where the conservation card is issued. Budget for both Raja Ampat government charges, which sit outside your fare alongside the other extras listed on our inclusions and booking page.
Two separate government charges apply, and they are constantly confused with each other. The marine park conservation card costs IDR 700,000 for foreign passport holders and IDR 425,000 for Indonesians, is valid for twelve months from purchase, and rests on West Papua Governor’s Regulation No. 4 of 2019. The Raja Ampat Regency visitor entry ticket is a different charge collected by a different body: IDR 1,000,000 per international visitor and IDR 300,000 per Indonesian visitor, per visit, paid through the SIPARI platform, in force since 1 January 2026. Government fees can be revised, so confirm the current amounts before you travel.
Why is the last day dive-free?
The 18-hour no-fly interval after repetitive multi-day diving. Boats build it in by stopping diving after the penultimate day, running back overnight and putting you ashore in the morning. It is not the operator being stingy with your dive count — it is the reason your dive total is what it is, as explained in how many dives a day you actually get. Plan your outbound flight accordingly: an afternoon departure from Sorong on disembarkation day is normal; an early-morning one is not.
What about baggage and dive gear?
Indonesian domestic allowances are tighter than long-haul, and dive kit is heavy. Three practical rules:
- Check the domestic allowance separately. Your international ticket’s generous allowance often does not carry through to a separately issued domestic leg. Prepaid excess is far cheaper than airport excess.
- Carry the irreplaceable items in hand baggage. Mask, dive computer, prescription medication, a change of clothes. Boats can lend a BCD; nobody can lend you your prescription mask.
